Phelps Mercantile, Inc. was founded by John Uvegas and Jim Cheney in 2000 when they bought out the old Phelps Agway branch. John had seen that Agway was going out of business and thought it would be fun to buy the local branch and turn it into a successful business. He called up Jim and asked to meet with him about a business proposition. On July 7th, 2000 John and Jim signed the final paperwork officially opening Phelps Mercantile, Inc. Their plan for the old Agway store was to improve it by providing quality household and hardware supplies at the local convenience, as well as to continue providing the services such as feed delivery and small engine repair, that Agway had always provided there. The first project was to expand the store itself to allow room for more variety. A few less walls later the store had more than doubled in size. The next project came unexpectedly when a rumor started around town in 2005 that the local video store, Mr. Video, was going out of business. In order to keep the business in town and prevent people from having to drive out of town for a movie, John and Jim decided to buy out Mr. Video, rename it “The Video Store at Phelps Mercantile” and move it into the store. The most recent store project has been this website and our online store.
